Structure of Water and Electrolyte Near an Electrode
Liquid water forms a structure in front of an electrode which is due to hydrogen bridge bonds between the molecules. This structure is reminiscent of ice-like clusters and determines the polarizability (differential capacitance) of the interface and the approach of ions, which have to reach an accommodation with this persisting structure. These results are derived from statistical mechanical calculations with integral equations for the central force model of water.
