Development of a New Force Microscope with a Fluorescence Optical Microscope
Combination of observations by conventional fluorescence microscope and recently developed vertical and lateral force microscope (atomic force microscope and frictional force microscope) gives us the two- or three-dimensional configurations, phase transitions and chemical information on the head groups of Langmuir-Blodgett films in a wide range of magnifications from macroscopic scale to molecular scale. We have successfully combined the two microscopes and the performance of the microscope was equal to the sum of those of the individual microscopes. Macroscopic episcopic fluorescent and force images of the step structures of photopolymerized 10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid Langmuir-Blodgett films and molecular images by force microscopes of the Langmuir Blodgett films have been obtained.
