Determination of Thin Foil Thickness Inhomogeneities by Analysis of Ion-Beam Energy-Loss Spectra
Some methods for evaluating thickness inhomogeneities in thin films especially suitable for beam foil experiments are presented. They are based on measurements of the energy loss and energy loss straggling of charged particles traversing the foils. One obtains two types of upper bound, and an approximate value for the ratio between the standard deviation of the foil thickness distribution and the mean foil thickness. An application to thin Mn foils is included.
