Optimization of a total plant design is discussed and illustrated with a newly developed process for the production of 1-octene from butadiene. The following process development steps are discussed; the process synthesis, the continuous optimization of the selected process flowsheet, and the optimization of process reliability. The methodologies followed and the results are discussed.
