Well control of an influx from a breathing fracture
Hydrocarbon influxes into the well-bore while drilling typically are caused by overpressured formations. Shut-in drillpipe pressure (SIDPP) is used to determine formation pore pressure and the driller's or the "wait and weight" method is used to remove the hydrocarbon influx from the well. Hydrocarbon influxes associated with fracture breathing are much less common and methods to deal with such influxes are not taught in the drilling industry. The full-length paper describes an exploration web-control situation that was at first interpreted as overpressure in which the well had to be killed by pumping cement, and a second well with a similar influx mechanism that was successfully drilled.
