Synthesis of 1-adamantylalkyl ethers via the reaction of 1-chloroadamantane with aliphatic alcohols and adamantanol-1 catalyzed by palladium complexes
The solvolysis of 1-chloroadamantane by alcohols in the presence of palladium complexes yielding 2-alkoxyadamantanes and di-l-adamantyl ether was studied. The influence of temperature, the reaction time, the length and branching of the alcohol alkyl group, and the molar ratio [AdCl] : [Pd] : [ROH] on the yield of the ethers and the reactant conversion was examined. The yields of 1-adamantylalkyl ethers are crucially dependent on the catalyst concentration and temperature, reaching their maximum (98%) at an [AdCl] : [Pd] molar ratio of 1-0.01 : 0.005 at 160 degreesC(1 h).
