Melt tearing and ovality in wire coating
We investigate how to avoid tearing, egg-shaped cross sections or foldover of the polymer melt cone in tube coating of wire. We use an isothermal Newtonian model for the melt cone. We calculate the melt stress and the draw ratio balance, the parameter used in industry to avoid process problems. The stress calculations help us explain ovality and tearing. To help practitioners apply the results we provide examples.
