Genetic evidence for highly diversified bacterial populations in wastewater sludge during biological leaching of metals
By coupling the sensitivity of 16S rRNA gene amplification by PCR (< 30 bacteria/ml), and the resolution of denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), we studied the bacterial populations involved in the metal biological leaching of wastewater sludge. We were thus able to enumerate more than 20 different bands, revealing a bacterial diversity undetected by cultivation techniques.
