A set of representative correlations for pressure drop across a fixed or expanding bed of solid particles was analysed with the aim of determining the applicability range of the capillary model. Using a phenomenological approach a domain was identified which seems to be disallowed for any correlation based on the capillary model and where the use of particulate model is recommendable.
