Wave formation by heating in thin metal film on an elastomer
Wave formation by heating rather than the usual cooling in a thin metal film on an elastomer is presented. A simple model is used to relate the wavelength of the waves thus formed to the heating temperature. An indirect method of estimating Young's modulus at elevated temperatures emerges from the analysis. The waves formed by heating can be made to appear or not to appear by the selection of the temperature to which the sample is heated. A relationship is given for the critical temperature that determines the appearance or nonappearance of the waves.
