AMARELLINA, A NEW CARBONIFEROUS PALAEOSIPHONOCLADALE (GREEN-ALGA) FROM THE MAGHREB
Amarellina, a new Carboniferous Palaeosiphonocladale is derived from the Maghreb, it is observed in five Algerian and Moroccan localities which range from the Late Visean to the Bashkirian. An autochtonous outcrop at the top of a waulsortian mud-mound enables us to reconstruct its habitat. The delicate and slender thallus proliferates in open marine ramps, below wave action and at the base oi the euphotic zone, it is generally associated with Stacheins, Ungdarellids and Fasciellids. The alga is often encountered as reworked material in turbulent shallow-water marine colitic grainstones and pelloid siltstones. Algal assemblages are veri complex, but the high floral diversity is due to the reworking of different niches. Morphologically, the alga represents a link between the Devonian-Carboniferous lssinellids - Paleoberesellids and the Carboniferous Beresellids.
