A multinuclei NMR study of dilute lamellar liquid crystals
Many surfactants form lyotropic liquid crystals that can be macroscopically oriented in a magnetic field. Several lamellar systems containing low concentrations (<0.09 m) of an n-hexadecylpyridinium salt, a sodium salt, 1-hexanol, and D2O have been investigated. The NMR of H-2 (in D2O), F-19 tin CF3COO-), and Na-23 (in sodium salts) was studied, and quadrupolar splitting for H-2 and Na-23 and dipolar splitting for F-19 were observed. The results are correlated with the phase behavior of the lyotropic systems as a function of temperature.
