Methods to investigate mechanical properties of coatings
The number of different coating processes and coating systems is rapidly increasing. The economic potential is growing as well. A German study calculated the economic turnover in thin film technology to be about 30 billion US$ in 1990, with an increase of about 10% in the following years. in consequence, measuring techniques and their standardization are becoming increasingly significant. This paper presents current mechanical characterization methods. The principles, differences and advantages are described. Some new techniques are also included such as the coating impact test which allows the fatigue strength of the coating and substrate system to be calculated, and the ultrasonic coating test which can provide more information on thin film adhesion. In this context it is necessary to discuss the feasibility of reference materials and standardization of the characterization methods. For the transfer of test results and to ensure acceptance by the customer, it is also necessary to calibrate the testing machines used.
