Fractal character of circumferences of polishing-induced pull outs of plasma sprayed Cr3C2-NiCr coatings
The polishing-induced pull outs of plasma sprayed Cr3C2-NiCr coatings using different starting powders were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and image analysis techniques. It was found that circumferences of the pull outs were irregular and could be described statistically by means of fractal analysis. Values of the fractal dimension were found to depend on fracture toughness of the coatings. It seems hopeful to use fractals to characterize circumferences of polishing-induced pull outs of some thermal sprayed coatings with which fracture toughness of the coatings can be correlated.
