The first example of a compound designed to sensitize semiconductors to visible light by electron transfer from both intervalent and excited states is Na-2[Fe(bpy)(CN)(4)], where bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine. The charge-transfer pathways are schematically depicted below. Photoelectrochemical and spectroscopic characterization are contrasted with that of Fe(CN)(6)(4-).
