All-metal ultrahigh vacuum optical fiber feedthrough
We describe the design and performance of an inexpensive bakeable ultrahigh vacuum-compatible metal-sealed optical fiber feedthrough. A machined aluminum plug replaces the forward ferrule of an otherwise unmodified Swagelok stainless steel compression fitting to make a seal to seven parallel aluminum-jacketed quartz optical fibers. We have found this design to be leak tight to 10(-9) cm(3)/min helium after baking repeatedly to 250 degreesC. The feedthrough my be disassembled by removing the fiber-and-plug assembly and then reassembled without creating leaks.
