Origin of structural instability in layered intercalation compounds
The mechanisms of the phase transitions in the A(a)MX(2)-type intercalates (A-inetal, MX2- layered dichalcogonide matrix) occurring upon a change in the stoichiometry (a) are studied. It is shown that maximal stoichiometric ratios, and trends of structural changes in intercalates are determined by stabilization of conduction bands ("electronic stabilization") of intercalates.
