A compilation of literature on chemical elemental characteristics of 280 samples of biomass fuels, including waste and peat, is presented. The compositions of the compiled fuel samples were further classified by principal component analysis with special respect to elements important for ash and deposit formation. From this analysis, a total of 15 biomass 'reference fuels' with similar compositions are presented, as well as the variances between them.
