LIGNOCELLULOSE AND SUGAR COMPOSITIONS OF SOME AGRO-WASTE MATERIALS
The cellulose content of the agro-wastes ranged from 240 (rice hull FARO-15) to 390 g kg-1 (com cob Amiacha); the hemicellulose composition was between 120 (rice hull IR-8) and 417 g kg-1 (corn cob Amiacha). Com cob TZSR-W contained the least quantity of lignin (45 g kg-1) while melon shells contained the highest (300 g kg-1). Gas chromatographic analysis of sugars in the hydrolysed lignocellulosic materials revealed both qualitative and quantitative varietal differences. Arabinose, galactose, glucose and xylose were present in all the materials, with glucose (144-234 g kg-1) and xylose (120-286 g kg-1) the most abundant sugars. Mannose and rhamnose were detected in some materials but not in others.
