On the definition of internal energy in thermostatics
In a very generous review (Jongschaap, 22001) of my latest book, the reviewer disagreed with the following comment on my use of the treatment or Born ( 1921. 1964) and Caratheodory: Moreover, the treatment (as it should be at this stage) is entirely macroscopic, the definitions being so clear that it is not necessary to appeal to molecular concepts as Callen [19601 does" (Lodge 1999, p. 7). The reviewer wrote: "Many readers will consider these starting points for deducing the basic laws and state functions of thermodynamics more difficult than for instance a treatment based upon Callen's (Callen 1985) approach of which the author suggests (p. 7) that an appeal to molecular concepts is needed. This, I think, is not correct; Callen's axioms are purely phenomenological and also acceptable without molecular considerations."
