Wave function of C-70 in the triplet state
Results of a C-13 pulsed electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) study at 95 GHz Of C-70 in its photoexcited triplet state are reported. The C-70 molecule of D-5h symmetry (an approximation for the triplet state) consists of 5 inequivalent types of carbon atoms, which we label I at the pole to 5 at the equator. The analysis of the ENDOR spectra reveals that the spin density is not uniformly distributed over the C-70 molecule. About 66% of the spin density is on the atoms of type 3, 20% on the atoms of type 4. and 16% on the atoms of type 1, whereas no spin density is found on the atoms of type 2 and 5. The spin-density distribution in the triplet state for C-70 is compared with that observed for C-60 previously.
