Surface Characterization of Titania Nanoparticles Encapsulated Monodisperse Crosslinked Polystyrene Particles
Monodisperse crosslinked polystyrene particles were prepared by the dispersion polymerization. Some general observations regarding the effect of initial reagent concentrations on final particle size and size distribution are offered with the use of the crosslinker divinylbenzene (DVB) in latex preparation. Up to 1% DVB was incorporated in the synthesis of coagulum-free, monodisperse polystyrene particles by controlling the entry of the crosslinker. A procedure has been developed to coat micron-size polystyrene particles with a smooth and monolayer of titanium dioxide by impact blending procedure. This procedure has been employed for the improvement of powder properties and in mixing homogeneously a small amount of material such as drugs and pigments. It was confirmed experimentally that small particles were fixed on large particles when the ratio of the diameter of the large particles. This easily causes the core particles to aggregate or the titania nanoparticles to form separate particles. The resulting titanium oxide coated polystyrene particles are very monodisperse.
