Recycling of Waste Polyurethane Foam by Glycolysis[1]
Glycolysis of waste polyurethane foam(PUF) has been investigated to provide useful data for the recyling of waste PUF. The glycolysis were performed under atmospheric pressure in a stirred flask kept at a constant temperature. Dipropyleneglycol(DPG) and potassium hydroxide(KOH) were used as the solvent and catalyst in the glycolysis system, respectively. The properties of the glycolysis products were determined by analyzing the hydroxyl value, total amine value, and viscosity. As the ratio of glycol to waste PUF increased, hydroxyl value of recycled polyol become decreased, but total amine value was increased. The hydroxyl value of recovered polyol had little effects on both the reaction rate and physical properties of the foam. The physical properties density, compressive strength, tensile strength of the foam did not depreciate with the amount of recovered polyols blended with virgin polyol up to 20 %.
