DSM to close polypropylene plant
Monsanto has partnered with three major paper companies to form a five-year, $60 million genomics joint venture to improve forestry health and productivity. Monsanto's partners include Fletcher Challenge Forests, Auckland, New Zealand; International Paper, Purchase, N.Y.; and Westvaco, New York City. The partners will use genomics to produce trees with faster growth rates, more wood, and improved fiber quality. The venture will produce and sell tree seedlings, focusing on those varieties now planted by the forest industry. The companies also will con tract with Genesis Research & Develop ment, a New Zealand-based biotechnology firm, to provide forestry genomics research. The partners say the first commercial offerings from the venture should be available between 2005 and 2007.
