The experimental findings indicate that the borate glass not only plays the role of an inert solvent for the remaining phases but reacts itself with Na- beta-Al2O3, thus adopting a certain sodium oxide content which in equilibrium with the metal and the metal oxide establishes the sodium potential of the system.
