Removal and Regeneration of Heavy Metal Ions Using Cation Exchange Column

In this work, the removal of heavy metal ions by the use of a strong cation exchange resin was studied experimentally in a fixed bed. Single and binary aqueous solutions of cadmium and lead ions were passed through the column packed with ion exchange resin and breakthrough curves were obtained. After the simultaneous removal of cadmium and lead ions, regeneration experiments were performed to recover the heavy metal ions. The ion exchange isotherm data were represented well by the Langmuir equation, and the cation exchange resin we used has a higher affinity for Pb2+ than Cd2+. Separation of the two heavy metal ions during the resin regeneration step was carried out in two steps: precipitation of lead as PbCl2 by use of NaCl solution and resolubilization of the lead precipitate by the use of sodium acetate solution. Because the lead precipitate is retained in the bed during the precipitation step, due to very low solubility, practically pure lead could be recovered.
