Optimum Conditions to Prepare Spherical Alumina Powder with Controlled Aggregation under the W/O Emulsion Method
E-mail:
Optimum conditions were established to fabricate spherical α-Al2O3 powder with controlled aggregation phenomena by using aluminum nitrate, as a starting material, under the W/O emulsion method. Aq. Al2O3 sol was employed as the water phase (W) and paraffin oil containing 2 vol. % SP80 as the oil phase (O). As experimental parameters, we chose (1) different types of pH adjustors, (2) various preparation times during the production of aq. Al2O3 sol at pH = 3, (3) diverse agitation times during formation of W/O emulsion at 2000 rpm and an 8:1 O:W volumetric ratio, and (4) the removal method of organic components, such as the use of paraffin oil and an emulsifier involved in gelled emulsion. α-Al2O3 powder with properties coinciding with the goals of this study were prepared by using an aq. Al2O3 sol of pH = 3 which was produced from Al(NO3)3and 25% NH4OH at 80℃ during a preparation time of 3 hrs, for the formation of an emulsion, which was formed during an agitation time of 1 hr, and then through combustion of this emulsion after gellation with the usage of (CH3CH2)3N.
