Exchange of stabilities for surface tension driven convection
An analytical proof is presented showing that the marginal or neutral state for surface-tension-driven convection in infinite liquid layers is stationary so that the principle of exchange of stabilities is valid. The method of Green's functions is used to reduce the eigenvalue problem to a single differential equation with an integral boundary condition. The proof is carried out using the adjoint version of this eigenvalue problem. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
