Case study: Optimizing production in a heavy-oil carbonate reservoir
The Issaran field, a heavy-oil reservoir with reserves of approximately 500 million bbl of oil was discovered in 1981, Before mid-1999, nine wells with a cumulative production of 450 BOPD were drilled. With oil price increases in 1999 and 2000, the Egyptian government made a concerted effort to develop this field. New and applied technology provided significant returns within 1 year of new investment. The field is producing as much as 1,800 BOPD from five new wells. The path to success began with definition of reservoir flow mechanism, optimized perforating schemes, enhanced carbonate stimulation, and improved completion designs.
