Planning for improved health, safety, and environmental performance
Business planning is critical to the viability of a company, and many companies go through an elaborate annual process for evaluating the historical information and for establishing formulas for future success. This endeavor typically is centered solely around the financial aspect of the business. When the evaluation is done well, the company reaps benefits in the form of increased profitability. In exploration :microcosm of this activity occurs to meet the financial plans. Wells are elaborately planned with the involvement of all levels of the organization The success of the well and the company's financial plans depend on these planning activities. The same planning process can yield marked results in health, safety and environmental (HSE) performance. However, many companies forgo the same type of planning process for improving safety or environmental performance. They rely instead on the HSE function to develop and implement tools that will decrease: the number of injuries or environmental incidents. While this approach has historically led to incremental increases in performance, true change occurs when the entire organization is engaged in supporting a plan for HSE, just as it does for the financial plan. Support and focus on the financial plans from the leaders of the organization demonstrates their commitment to achieving the goals. When the same approach is applied to HSE plans, the commitment to the health and well-being of the employees and the environment is noticeable. Without support from the highest management level, any program (be it Safety, financial, or a drilling program) will fail.
