How does the double layer at a disk electrode charge?
Because of the nonuniform accessibility of its surface to ion transport from the solution. the double layer at an inlaid disk electrode charges anomalously in response to a potential step. A numerical simulation of the problem shows that the overall current versus time transient differs little from that for a single resistor in series with a single capacitor. Nevertheless. the charging process, away from the disk's perimeter, differs surprisingly from what might be expected in that the current density initially increases with time. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V.
