The positive economic impact of a metal bearing seal on roller-cone bits used in conjunction with downhole motors and steerable systems in an Abu Dhabi onshore field has been dramatic. The metal seal has extended seal/bearing life of roller-cone bits significantly and has resulted in more on-bottom drilling time. The bits have been used successfully to kick off from vertical and drill the 8 1/2-in. build section at 8 degrees to 14 degrees /100 ft to the landing point at 90 degrees. Drilling costs were reduced 42% per foot.
