Measurements demonstrated that liquid backmixing from freeboard to bed affects gas-liquid mass transfer in fluidized beds, especially when there is a gradual transition between bed and freeboard. New models account for continuous variations with height of the volumetric mass-transfer and axial dispersion coefficients.
