Mean Residence Time and Variance in Steady Counterflow Separations
Analytical expressions for the mean residence time and variance of species separated in steady counterflow have been derived. The counterflow column was modelled as a multiport sytem composed of discrete equilibrium stages with inlets and outlets closed to diffusion. Limiting cases of the relations for residence time and variance reduce to well-known expressions for fixed-bed separations. Mean residence times of species separated in fixed-bed and counterflow systems are compared.
