Using a Telechelic Macromonomer Cross-Linkable Stabilizer (TMCS) in Dispersion Polymerization

We have compared the roles of a telechelic macromonomer cross-linkable stabilizer (TMCS) and commercial poly(N-vinylpyrollidone) (PVP) as stabilizers during the dispersion polymerization of styrene. The existence of the terminal vinyl group of TMCS in the polystyrene particles was verified using FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectroscopy, whereas the crosslinked PS particles prepared by the reaction with TMCS were confirmed using GPC. More uniform PS microspheres were prepared using TMCS. The existence of the urethane and methyl groups of TMCS in the PS microspheres indicates that TMCS behaved as a reactive stabilizer resulting in crosslinkable polymers, whereas PVP behaved as a steric stabilizer.
