Effect of Binary Conductive Agents in Spinel LiMn2O4 Cathodes on Electrochemical Performance of Li-ion Batteries

To improve the electrochemical performance of Li-ion batterie, when LiMn2O4 is employed as a cathode active material, binary conductive agents were prepared by using two carbon black samples (SuperP and Vulcan XC-72R) having different particle sizes. Particle size distribution of these commercially available conductive agents showed approximately 7 times of difference. LiMn2O4 cathodes were prepared using different combinations of SuperP and Vulcan XC-72R. The electrochemical performance of the LiMn2O4 cell systems using binary conductive agents were evaluated in terms of the specific charge and discharge capacities and the cycle life. The cell containing the binary conductive agent at a weight ratio of 3:7 (SuperP to Vulcan XC-72R) exhibited the best electrochemical performance as a result of the optimum combination of ionic diffusion rate and electric contact.
