Polymers prepared by nitroxide-mediated polymerization undergo single electron oxidation of the N-alkoxyamine end group upon treatment with ceric ammonium nitrate. This facile reaction proceeds efficiently under mild conditions to produce monotelechelic polymers. A mechanism for cleavage of the N-alkoxyamine is proposed, and the utility of this process is explored through derivatization with various end groups.
