Milling of sucrose
Milling of sucrose has been carried out as part of an initiative to develop a methodology for predicting the milling behaviour of organic solids based on their single particle properties. The work includes the single particle impact testing and bulk milling using a single ball oscillating mill. The results show that sucrose is a brittle material with the breakage extent proportional to the square of the impact velocity and the proportionality factor increases with particle size. The bulking milling behaviour is analysed by assuming the first order kinetics. The corresponding rate constant is found to be a function of milling dynamics expressed in terms of the mill oscillating frequency. Relationship between the rate constant and the proportionality factor derived from the single particle impact testing is established. Discussion of the relationship is made and suggestions for the future work are given. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
