A simple and highly stereoselective method has been developed for the synthesis of (Z)-beta-iodo Baylis-Hillman adducts utilizing gallium(HI) iodide as a novel reagent. This new procedure offers significant advantages such as high conversions, short reaction times and enhanced Z-selectivity together with mild reaction conditions. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V.
