Investigation of the durability of sodium calcium aluminum borosilicate glass containing different additives
The durability of sodium calcium aluminum borosilicate glass specimens containing 0.5% Fe2O3 and 0.5 & 1.0% CeO2 were investigated by immersing the specimen into a distilled water, EDTA-Na-Fe(III) and EDTA-2Na solutions at 100 degreesC for 7 and 3 days, respectively. The sample surface was analysed with ESCA, electron microprobe X-ray analyser (XPS). The iron-containing glass exhibited excellent chemical durability in distilled water, while the glass containing 0.5% CeO2 was the best in EDTA-Na-Fe(III) solution for 3 days. However, on increasing the time of leaching to 7 days, the glass with 1.0% CeO2 becomes the best. The effect of changing the pH values of the EDTA-2Na solution on the leaching process was also investigated. The surface roughness of the present glasses has been investigated by using atomic force microscope (AFM).
