Towards protein crystal growth on the International Space Station (ISS) - innovative tools, diagnostics and applications
The investigation of the protein crystal growth process and the growth of perfect crystals are major elements of protein research. Intensive basic and application-oriented protein research continuously reveals demand for new and modified tools. To gain maximum benefit from the jig environment and new capabilities of ISS innovative new tools and diagnostics are being developed. Also, to supplement ISS capabilities, opportunities aboard a free-flying spacecraft are possible. Commercial use of ISS in the future is envisioned. Current and planned advanced hardware like APCF and PCDF will be adapted to take advantage of these opportunities.
