Catalytic combustion: New catalysts for new technologies
Low temperature catalytic combustion of lean natural gas mixtures represents the most effective method for elimination or substantial reduction of highly toxic NOx otherwise generated in high temperature flames. There exists a wide range of applications for catalytic combustion, for which however, new low cost technologies including suitable catalysts have to be developed. Fluidized beds and cyclic feed fixed beds for which simulation and experimental data are presented are two possibilities of exploiting catalytic combustion for nonpolluting natural gas hot air generation. Low cost highly active nickel-cobalt based perovskite type catalysts being developed by freeze-drying have a high potential for application in these combustors, as indicated in this paper.
