Crystallization of heavy-metal phosphates in solution - IV: growth of Cd5H2(PO4)(4),4H(2)O in magnetic field
Crystal growth of Cd5H2(PO4)(4),4H(2)O has been studied by mass crystallization experiments in a magnetic field of B = 0.27 T at different initial supersaturations. Crystals were generally smaller than without field. Like in previous zero-field study, spiral growth at low supersaturation and surface nucleation or a mixture of both at high supersaturation were observed, but surface nucleation is dominating over a larger range of supersaturations. For the edge free energies lambda(hkl) significantly lower values in magnetic field were found for (100) and for (110) at low initial supersaturation, and the rate constants for spiral growth of (001) is significantly higher. In general, the advancement of steps across a crystal face is faster in magnetic field. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
