The effect of recycle of mass and energy on the dynamic characteristics of a processing plant is examined. The introduction of recycle of mass and energy may sometimes be considered analoguous to feedback, and may change the plant eigenvalues and cause large time constants, instability or complex nonlinear behavior. The effects are greatly influenced by the choice of independent variables. Some simple effects are listed which may give rise to complex behavior in a plant.
