In this article, the recent progress in nanostructure fabrication by MBE with respect to order/disorder at heterointerfaces and in the bulk of thin films will be discussed. Of particular importance is the question of the benefit of either order or disorder for the actual electronic properties. The discussed examples often provide surprising answers to this.
