This paper, details a scientific method, based on lignite characterisation, through which lignite quality may be confidently predicted and evaluated for power station purposes. The paper examines mathematical relationships between lignite characteristics, which may be utilised by power station operators to resolve common quality control issues and determine the energy capabilities of any lignite. The paper outlines program lignite, a state-of-the-art modelling system, designed by the authors. The program permits rapid determination of lignite quality and has applications at power stations, mines, exploration sites and in assay laboratories. The paper concludes by considering on-line quality assessment between mine mouth and power station furnace.
