An Integreated Approach to Process/Product Design and Synthesis Based on Properties-Process Relationship
A combined methodology employing appropriate physico-chemical properties’ estimation methods, the process synthesis algorithm of Jaksland et al. (1995a) and the product design algorithm of Constantinou et al. (1995) is presented. The new methodology addresses the question of integration of design and control in the early stages of process design by establishing relationships between physico-chemical properties, process design and process control. In each case, a common set of properties and variables that promote the integration, are identified. The important features of the new methodology are : properties are classified with respect to process synthesis, product/process design and control; identified relationships between properties, process synthesis, process/product design and control are exploited; and finally, an analysis/validation step is employed to screen/confirm the generated alternatives. Two examples of application of the methodology are also presented.
