One of the areas within JOULE is Rational Use of Energy in Industry which includes activities in CAFE (Computer Aided Process Engineering) for the energy intensive process industries. This paper describes a number of CAFE projects within JOULE, including energy synthesis, novel processes, exploratory studies and environmentally reinforced processes. Energy and environmental benefits arising out of theses projects are in some cases quantified.
