Integrated Information Modeling Strategies for Safe Design in the Process Industries
For process plants which are involved in potentially hazardous activities or handle dangerous substances, a key objective is inherently safer design, particularly at the early conceptual stage. Ideally this should be an exercise in Concurrent Engineering and information sharing, with the design team working in tandem with safety experts. This paper discusses the development of an integrated information model for the key process life-cycle activities of design and safety. This has provided a structure upon which a computerised data management and exchange system has been built. This will mean that safety information will be accessible by design engineers, safety experts, operating companies, and regulatory authorities throughout the plant life-cycle. This represents a major step towards enhancing current loss prevention procedures in the process industries.
