Technical ceramics, shape-memory alloys and catalysts are among the materials which can be produced using self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS). The high-temperatures and synthesis rates result in self-purification, self annealing and self-purification phenomena which lead to materials which differ considerably in structure from those conventionally produced. The method and its applications are described by one of its discoverers.
